PM Modi’s yoga practice today on Red Road, where fighter planes had once landed

Knews Desk– On the occasion of International Yoga Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a grand yoga program organized on the historic Red Road of Kolkata. This is the same Red Road, which has closely witnessed many historical moments of British rule, Second World War and independent India. The road which was once used as an emergency runway for fighter planes, has today become the center of India’s cultural heritage and global recognition of yoga.

The Red Road in the center of Kolkata, officially called Indira Gandhi Sarani, passes through the Maidan area. Due to its location near Fort William, its strategic importance has always been very special. This road was constructed during the British rule for military parades and exercises. Its width and straight design make it special.

The Red Road got its name from the red colored gravel and pebbles used in its construction. Although asphalt was laid on it with time, its historical name still remains on people’s lips.

The role of this road was very important during the Second World War. In view of the threat of Japanese attacks, the British administration converted it into an emergency airstrip. The road was so wide and long that fighter planes could land easily here. This is the reason that even today the construction of tall buildings around it is limited and this area is considered important from a strategic point of view.

After independence, the Red Road became the center of major government and cultural events of West Bengal. Grand events like Republic Day Parade, Independence Day Celebrations and Durga Puja Carnival are organized here every year. The greenery and plain areas spread on both sides make it one of the most beautiful roads of Kolkata.

Today, when Prime Minister Modi practiced yoga with thousands of people on this historic road, it was not just a government program, but became a symbol of India’s heritage, where history, culture and modernity are seen together. Red Road, which was once the center of war preparations, has today become the carrier of the message of peace, health and yoga.
