New Delhi: The PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme has achieved a significant milestone, with over 50.06 lakh households across the country now benefiting from rooftop solar installations.
At the same time, the implementation of this scheme includes arrangements like digital platform, integration of power distribution companies and quick subsidy payment.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a statement issued on Tuesday that under the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme’, rooftop solar plants have been installed in more than 50.06 lakh houses across the country.
The ministry said that this achievement has been achieved in a little more than two years since the launch of the scheme, whereas in the previous 10 years, only rooftop solar plants were installed in 7.94 lakh houses.
The ministry said that under this scheme with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the expansion of rooftop solar capacity has been accelerated.
According to the data, the pace of installation of these plants has increased by 3.2 times in the last 9 months, with daily installations increasing from 5,038 in October 2025 to around 16,328 in July 2026. 5.06 lakh households have rooftop solar plants installed in July 2026, which is the highest monthly figure till date.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said that so far subsidy worth Rs 28,024 crore has been released to the beneficiaries of the scheme through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
This has resulted in zero electricity bills for nearly 1.9 million families. In FY 2024-25, more than 1.2 million families earned a total of ₹421 crore by selling excess electricity generated, equivalent to an average annual income of approximately ₹3,500 per family.
According to the ministry, concessional loan facility has been sanctioned to 21.87 lakh applicants, out of which 17.5 lakh establishments have been completed through loan.
Under the scheme, 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed so far. A network of 34,219 registered vendors has been developed, of which 29,469 are active, and over 2.32 lakh people have been trained.
Solar energy to power 50 lakh Indian homes
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said in a post on X that the PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme is making clean energy a reality for millions of families.
He stated that over 1.9 million households are receiving zero electricity bills. This scheme is empowering citizens and rapidly moving India towards a clean and energy-secure future.
Joshi said that under the initiative to install solar plants on the rooftops of government buildings, plants have been installed in 1.06 lakh buildings identified by the Centre and states.
More than 25,000 Central Government buildings and more than 81,000 State Government buildings are powered by rooftop solar power, further strengthening India’s journey towards a clean, sustainable and energy-secure future.
