Police busy searching for the accused who fled after killing American girlfriend

Police are searching for a Jordanian migrant who fled Ireland after the murder of his American girlfriend, who they met at a pro-Palestinian protest. Irish police have described 28-year-old Ahmed Al-Saqr as a ‘person of significant interest’ in the murder of 43-year-old Jamie Carney in Killarney, County Kerry on Monday. Carney, a resident of Westchester County, New York, was found dead the next day in her rented home, where she lived with her 13-year-old daughter. According to Irish media reports, his body was found under a quilt by a family member. Some media outlets say that his daughter was the one who witnessed this horrific scene.

According to media reports, Jamie Carney was badly beaten and had serious head injuries, but a post-mortem conducted by Irish State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan revealed that he died of suffocation.

Locals are said to have heard a loud argument at his luxurious home the night before his body was found, which is now being investigated by Ireland’s police force, the Garda. Al-Saqr and Carney (who has a 13-year-old daughter from a previous relationship) met at a pro-Palestine protest in Ireland about 18 months before Carney was murdered.

Jamie Carney is photographed with her boyfriend Ahmed Al-Saqr. He is a ‘person of significant interest’ in the murder of an American mother in Ireland last week. Carney, from Westchester County, New York, was found dead of asphyxiation at her home in Killarney, County Kerry on Tuesday.

What Irish reports say

Al-Saqr first came to Ireland in 2024 and applied for asylum shortly thereafter. He is believed to have surrendered his passport when applying for international protection, as is required under the Irish asylum system. However, Irish reports say the document was returned to him after he was granted subsidiary protection. This is a legal status granted to people who do not qualify as refugees, but who may face serious harm if sent back to their home country. This decision meant that when al-Saqr allegedly fled Ireland, his passport was still with him.
