Had overthrown my father

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was born on 1 January 1952. He took military training at Britain’s prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and later held many important responsibilities in the Qatar Army. He was officially declared heir apparent in 1977. But he achieved this by snatching power. In June 1995 he ousted his father Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani from power in a bloodless palace coup. After this he himself became the Emir of Qatar. This happened at a time when his father was vacationing in Switzerland. The father had to live in exile in France and Abu Dhabi and returned in 2004.

He himself handed over power to his son.

Sheikh Hamad’s 18-year rule changed the face of Qatar. Under his leadership, vast reserves of natural gas were developed on a large scale and Qatar became one of the most prosperous countries in the world. It was during this period that Al Jazeera News Network was established in 1996. One of his decisions of 2013 is also considered to be one of his biggest political achievements. He voluntarily handed over power to his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. His step was considered a different example for the Muslim countries of West Asia. This is because in most of the countries, change of power often happens after the death of the ruler or a coup.

did not escape controversy

However, his legacy was not completely untouched by controversies. The decision to remove his father from power remained a topic of discussion for a long time. Apart from this, questions were also raised from time to time at the international level regarding the editorial policy of Al Jazeera and its relations with organizations like Hamas of Qatar. Despite this, he is remembered as the leader who gave a new identity to a small Gulf country at the economic, diplomatic and global levels.
