The Tarique Rahman government of Bangladesh has issued instructions to ensure strict compliance of the court-imposed ban on broadcast and publication of any statement, speech or interview of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The government has asked all print, electronic, online and social media platforms not to violate court orders. The government said in its statement issued late on Friday night that in the year 2024, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had banned the telecast of Sheikh Hasina’s statements. Apart from this, legal restrictions are also applicable in Bangladesh on broadcasting statements, interviews or audio-video messages of a person who has been convicted by the court and who is declared absconding. The government has asked media organizations to strictly follow all these instructions.

Sheikh Hasina announces visit to Bangladesh

This step has been taken at a time when Sheikh Hasina’s interview given to news agency Reuters was published and broadcast by many media organizations of Bangladesh. After this, the government issued a new warning to the media reminding them of the court orders. On the other hand, London-based senior Bangladeshi journalist Syed Badrul Ahsan, reacting to Sheikh Hasina’s recent statement, said that her determination to return to Bangladesh is an indication that she still remains the most influential political leader of the country. He said that if Sheikh Hasina returns home, the country should take full responsibility for her security.
