Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has slammed Union Minister H.D. in the sting operation controversy. Challenged Kumaraswamy to present evidence in support of the allegations. Kharge said that evidence should be handed over to the investigating agencies and the investigation should be allowed to be completed.
Kalaburagi: Political controversy has intensified in Karnataka regarding the alleged sting operation involving former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. State Home Minister Priyank Kharge met Union Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy has been challenged to present concrete evidence in support of his allegations. Kharge said that if Kumaraswamy has any specific information or evidence related to the case, he should put it before the police authorities or the court instead of making a public statement.
Speaking to reporters in Kalaburagi on Saturday, Kharge said the investigation should be allowed to run its course and no conclusions should be reached before its findings are out. He suggested that Kumaraswamy could hand over the material in his possession to the Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) or resort to the judicial process.
Priyank Kharge insisted on presenting evidence
Amidst the allegations related to the sting operation, Priyank Kharge termed the investigation process as important and said that the veracity of any allegation should be determined on the basis of available evidence and findings of investigation. His stance is that if a person has information related to the case, he should pass it on to the competent authorities.
Kharge stressed that no one should be convicted on the basis of public allegations before the investigation is completed. According to him, the investigating agencies should get an opportunity to investigate the facts of the case and interrogate the people concerned.
This controversy has come to light at a time when there is a phase of allegations and counter-allegations in Karnataka politics regarding the alleged sting video and the claims related to it. There has been a heated exchange of words on this issue between the leaders of the ruling Congress and the opposition Janata Dal (Secular).
What is the sting operation controversy related to Siddaramaiah?
The controversy is over an alleged video clip, in relation to which opposition leaders have made allegations of political conspiracy and defamation. According to media reports, it was claimed that the video could be used to damage the image of former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah.
Janata Dal (Secular) leaders have demanded an investigation into the production of the video, its dissemination and the role of people associated with it. The party has also alleged that the video may have been used to gain political mileage, defame the leaders or allegedly create pressure. However, the veracity of these claims is a matter of investigation and cannot be considered as established facts.
This case has also gained political importance because the names of senior leaders of Karnataka have emerged in it. At the center of the controversy are questions like the authenticity of the video, the role of the people who made it and the alleged motive behind it.
An important aspect of the investigation is whether the content of the video is complete or edited, under what circumstances it was recorded and what was the purpose behind making it public. Answers to these questions can emerge only on the basis of official investigation and available evidence.
Kumaraswamy raised questions regarding investigation
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has raised questions on the action of the state government and the police in this controversy. He demanded a fair investigation into the matter and alleged that his party workers were being targeted during the investigation.
According to reports, Kumaraswamy had visited the Police Commissioner's office in Bengaluru on October 15 to protest against the investigation into the case. He demanded that the police interrogate him directly, rather than his workers, if there were any questions about his role in the investigation. He also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances behind the alleged sting operation.
Kumaraswamy has also stressed the need for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or a judicial inquiry into the matter. He says that all aspects related to the dispute should be investigated impartially. On the other hand, the state government has currently adopted the stance of continuing the investigation.
Amidst the allegations made by Kumaraswamy and the demand for investigation, Kharge has reiterated that if he has any concrete information, it should be made available to the concerned investigating authorities. In this way, the dispute between the two leaders is no longer limited to just political rhetoric, but differences have also emerged regarding the process of investigation and its scope.
Karnataka government took the stance of continuing the investigation
Karnataka government's reaction has also come to light on this controversy. According to media reports, the state cabinet had discussed the matter on October 15. At that time, no decision was taken to constitute a separate special investigation team and Chief Minister D.K. The decision was left to Shivakumar.
Home Minister Priyank Kharge had earlier also said that the state police is capable of investigating the matter. He had also objected to the demand for investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The stance of the state government has been to first allow the ongoing investigation to proceed and then take further action based on the facts emerging.
Meanwhile, the war of words continues between Kumaraswamy and Congress leaders. While the opposition is raising questions on the impartiality and scope of the investigation, the state government says that the matter should be clarified through investigation.
Eyes fixed on the findings of the investigation
The most important questions at present in the sting operation controversy are regarding the authenticity of the video, the role of the people involved in its creation and dissemination and the alleged political objective. The investigating agencies will have to investigate all these aspects to make it clear whether there is sufficient evidence to support the allegations or not.
Priyank Kharge's appeal to Kumaraswamy to present evidence has come amid this wider controversy. Kharge says the allegations should be put before competent institutions, while Kumaraswamy is demanding a fair and comprehensive investigation.
Right now it would not be appropriate to present all the allegations of any party as a conclusion proved by the investigation. Only further action in the case, interrogation of the people concerned and the findings of the official investigation will be able to clarify what were the circumstances behind the alleged sting operation and who played what role.
