Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday described Waris Punjab De as a “virus” allegedly created to divide the Sikh community and weaken the Akali Dal, and appealed to Punjabis to unite under the SAD banner to restore peace, communal harmony and development in the state.
Addressing a rally in Ghanaur as part of the party's ongoing 'Punjab Bachao' campaign, Badal compared the organization to Covid-19 and alleged that its objective was to create divisions within the Sikh community and weaken the SAD.
“Just like the Covid-19 virus threatened the destruction of the world; Waris Punjab De virus is programmed to create infighting in the Sikh community and weaken SAD,” he said.
Badal also referred to remarks allegedly made by members of Waris Punjab De from the stage at Baba Bakala during the Rakhar Punya gathering, claiming that the organization had acknowledged that its primary objective was to eliminate the SAD and the Badal family rather than seek political power or work for Punjab.
He urged people to remain cautious of what he described as “traitors” presenting themselves as devout Sikhs. Badal alleged that some members of the organization had earlier appeared on Aam Aadmi Party platforms and claimed this was why Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had deputed PRTC buses for the Rakhar Punya rally.
The SAD president also targeted Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, alleging that his family had supported the Congress in the past and campaigned against Paramjit Kaur Khalra during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Badal questioned the organization's decision to launch a morcha seeking Amritpal Singh's release instead of raising the issue of Bandi Singhs, or Sikh prisoners. He alleged that this demonstrated that the organization was not pursuing a genuine Sikh cause and accused it of working with “anti-Punjab forces” to push the state back towards the troubled period of the 1980s.
Drawing a contrast with the SAD, Badal said the party had never launched a protest seeking the release of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, despite his having spent 16 years in jail.
“Amritpal and his family have no sacrifice to their name. They have not even supported a Bandi Singh family who lives in the same village as them,” he said.
Badal targets AAP government
The SAD chief also attacked the Aam Aadmi Party government over Punjab's debt and alleged expenditure on government publicity.
He claimed Punjab's debt had increased from Rs 1.5 lakh crore to Rs 4.5 lakh crore over the past five years, alleging that public money was being wasted.
“Over Rs 6,000 crore has been spent on fake advertisements, and many Delhi contractors are minting money because they are being given contracts for tents and rallies and other AAP events,” Badal alleged.
He also criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the government's medical college projects, alleging that foundation stones had been laid but construction had not progressed.
