Sardar Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra returned home after 12 days, with former Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission chairman and Sri Chamkaur Sahib constituency in-charge Jasvir Singh Garhi welcoming him by lighting a traditional lamp with desi ghee and performing a griha pravesh ceremony.

Garhi subsequently met the family, listened to their concerns and assured them of all possible support in their fight for justice. He said the struggle for the rights of the poor, oppressed and Dalit communities would be pursued beyond divisions of caste and religion.

“Tar Khan Majra family is now not four, but five brothers. I will stand with you as your younger brother and fight resolutely to take this struggle to its desired destination,” Garhi said.

The matter relates to allegations of caste-based abuses and assault against Congress leader Barinder Singh Dhillon. Garhi objected to the Chandigarh Police allegedly not invoking the applicable legal provisions in the case. He also questioned the alleged delay in applying provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Garhi raised questions about the role of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, alleging that Tarkhan Majra had been actively working among people in villages and localities across the Bassi Pathana Assembly constituency. He claimed this had caused political concern for Channi over the Assembly ticket of his brother, Dr Manohar Singh. Garhi alleged that the assault could have been carried out through Dhillon to protect Dr Manohar Singh's political prospects. He also questioned whether Channi was allegedly intervening to obstruct legal action against Dhillon.

Garhi demanded an impartial investigation and said anyone found involved in a conspiracy or interference should face action under the law.

Tarkhan Majra said he had to struggle for a long time to get a police complaint registered over the alleged assault and atrocities at Congress Bhawan. He expressed disappointment that the relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act had still not been invoked. He also said no Punjab Congress leader had raised a voice in his support and questioned Channi's silence.

Congress leader Manjit Sharma, who attended the gathering, claimed he was an eyewitness to the alleged caste-based abuse and assault. He said the struggle to secure justice for the family would continue.

Garhi said Dhillon would not be allowed to evade legal action and asserted that the family's case would be taken up on every legal and democratic platform.
