Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday shared an emotional message about his mother Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir, “Belonging: A Journey of Love”, saying he was proud that her life story would finally be read by millions.
Rahul Gandhi said he last saw his parents, Sonia and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, together more than 35 years ago. In a post marking Rajiv Gandhi’s 82nd birth anniversary, he praised his mother’s “never-ending courage and dignity” in dealing with the challenges and personal losses she faced after his father’s death.
“I am happy, and so proud, that your story – ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ – will finally be read by the millions of people who love you,” Rahul Gandhi wrote.
He added that he and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among the few people who knew how difficult Sonia Gandhi’s life had been following Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.
Sonia Gandhi memoir to be released in November
Publisher Alfred A. Knopf has announced that Sonia Gandhi’s memoir will be published on November 10, 2026.
The book will trace her journey from her childhood in post-war Italy to her meeting and marriage with Rajiv Gandhi, and her life in India. It is also expected to recount the devastating assassinations of her mother-in-law, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and her husband, Rajiv Gandhi.
The memoir’s cover features a black-and-white photograph of Sonia Gandhi from her younger years.
Sonia Gandhi’s journey from Italy to India
Born in Italy, Sonia Gandhi met Rajiv Gandhi in Cambridge in 1965 when she was 19. The two married on February 25, 1968.
Sonia Gandhi later became one of the most influential figures in the Congress party and served as its longest-serving president. Her memoir is expected to provide a more personal account of her life, family and relationship with India.
Rahul Gandhi ended his message with an emotional tribute to his late father, writing that on Rajiv Gandhi’s birthday, he could imagine him “smiling and looking down proudly” at Sonia Gandhi.
