'Tried to push woman cop': BJP attacks Rahul Gandhi over Delhi protest

The political confrontation surrounding the Opposition’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar intensified on Wednesday after the BJP accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of attempting to push a woman police officer during the demonstration in Delhi.

The BJP circulated a video of the incident on social media and alleged that Gandhi had tried to push the woman personnel while police were attempting to clear protesters from the area. BJP leaders used the footage to step up their criticism of the Congress leader.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged that Gandhi attempted to push the woman police personnel while she was involved in removing a woman protester from the spot.

He also criticized Gandhi over his presence at the confrontation and questioned his conduct during the protest.

BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia separately accused the Congress leader of touching the woman officer and demanded an apology from him.

The allegations came as the Opposition’s protest over the Election Commission entered another contentious phase in the national capital. INDIA bloc leaders have been protesting against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the poll panel of electoral irregularities and raising the issue of alleged ‘vote chori’.

The protest later turned into a confrontation between demonstrators and Delhi Police as leaders tried to move towards Jantar Mantar.

Police detained several Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The latest controversy centers on the brief confrontation captured in the video shared by the BJP.

While the BJP has interpreted the footage as showing Gandhi attempting to push a woman police officer, the allegation remains a claim made by the ruling party and should not be presented as an established finding without an independent determination of what occurred.

The incident has provided the BJP with another point of attack against Gandhi, who has been leading the Opposition’s campaign against the Election Commission.

BJP leaders have sought to portray the episode as evidence of inappropriate conduct towards police personnel.

The Congress leader’s side had not immediately issued a response specifically addressing the BJP’s allegation over the woman officer, according to reports.

The controversy also unfolded against the backdrop of competing allegations over the conduct of police and protesters during the demonstration. Priyanka Gandhi had criticized the police action, alleging that she was manhandled during the detention, while Opposition leaders accused the authorities of using force against protesters.

The contrasting claims have added another layer to an already politically charged protest, with the BJP focusing on the alleged interaction involving Rahul Gandhi and the woman police officer, while the Opposition has continued to challenge the police action and press its demands against the Election Commission.

For now, the central claim surrounding the woman officer rests on the BJP’s interpretation of the video footage. Any definitive conclusion about whether Gandhi deliberately tried to push the officer would require assessing the footage in its full context, rather than relying solely on the political claims surrounding it.
