Railway VDA Hike 2026: Big update for contract workers in Railways, now minimum wage will be up to ₹ 840 per day.

Railway VDA Hike 2026: An important update related to salary for contract employees in Railways has come out. The revised rates of Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) received by these employees have become effective from October 1, 2026. Railway Board has issued necessary instructions to the officials in this regard. This will impact eligible contract employees engaged in work like construction, cleaning, security and loading-unloading of goods.

Under the new system, the minimum wage will be calculated on the basis of the category of work, skill and workplace of the employee. In such a situation, instead of getting the same salary, all the employees will be paid according to different rates.

Which employees will get the benefit of the new rates?

The revised VDA rates will be applicable to eligible employees who work through contractors in various works related to Railways. These include many types of work.

Construction and Maintenance: Employees working in roads, buildings, runways, underground cables, power lines, water supply and sewerage pipelines can come under its purview.

Cleaning work: Eligible employees engaged in cleaning work falling under the prescribed rules are also to be given minimum wages as per the revised rates. Works prohibited under law are not included in this.

security services: The prescribed minimum wage rates will also be applicable to eligible employees handling security at railway premises and related places.

loading and unloading: New rates have also been fixed for the employees working in loading and unloading goods at the goods shed, parcel office, warehouse and other related places of the Railways.

Minimum wage ranging from ₹565 to ₹840 per day (Railway VDA Hike 2026)

As per details available, VDA rates for employees involved in loading and unloading of goods vary by region. It has been fixed at ₹317 per day for Zone A, ₹267 per day for Zone B and ₹215 per day for Zone C.

The total daily wage including basic minimum wage and VDA is as follows:

Area basic wages VDA total daily minimum wage
Area A ₹523 ₹317 ₹840
Area B ₹437 ₹267 ₹704
Area C ₹350 ₹215 ₹565

It is worth noting here that these figures represent the total daily minimum wage for the concerned category of employees. These should not be considered as actual increases in salary. The actual increase will be known only by comparing the old and new rates.

Wage rates will also differ depending on skill

For employees engaged in construction work, not only the area of the workplace but also their skill level is important. VDA for unskilled workers in zones A, B and C is ₹317, ₹267 and ₹215 per day respectively.

Whereas for highly skilled workers, the same rates have been fixed at ₹ 418, ₹ 387 and ₹ 354 per day respectively. Therefore, the minimum wage to be paid to an employee will be determined based on the category of his work and the applicable rules.

VDA changed on the basis of inflation index

The revision in VDA rates is done on the basis of Consumer Price Index of Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). According to available information, the average of the index increased from 424.80 to 431.42. An increase of 6.62 points was recorded in this.

VDA is determined in the minimum wage by taking into account the change in inflation index. Its objective is to provide some relief to the workers from the impact of inflation.

Contractors will have to follow the rules

Railway Board has directed the officials to ensure payment of prescribed minimum wages to eligible employees working through contractors. Railways being the principal employer will monitor compliance with applicable labor laws and related rules.

The revised rates are said to be effective from October 1, 2026. Therefore, it is important to keep these rates in mind while making payments to eligible employees.
