‘Rang Rasiya’ surrounded by bold content and religious controversies, release stuck for six years, then reached theaters again

New Delhi . In the history of Indian cinema, there have been many films which had to face controversies due to their story or presentation. Such films include the period drama ‘Rang Rasiya’ starring Randeep Hooda, whose release was postponed for almost six years due to censor related hurdles and continuous protests. This film, which was ready in the year 2008, finally reached theaters in the year 2014.

The story of this film by director Ketan Mehta is inspired by the life and art of famous painter Raja Ravi Varma. In the film, Randeep Hooda has played the role of a painter who tries to convey the images of Gods and Goddesses to the common people through his art. At that time, his painting was also considered a medium for social and cultural change.

The film depicts the artist’s personal life, his thinking and his artistic expression in detail. In this sequence, the relationship between the main character and the woman who became his inspiration was also made a part of the story. These scenes contained many bold and intimate themes, which were the most objected to. For these reasons the film faced many challenges during the Central Board of Film Certification process.

Some posters and scenes of the film also caused controversy. Many organizations alleged that the depictions related to Hindu Gods and Goddesses have been presented in an objectionable manner, which may hurt religious sentiments. Protests took place at various places regarding this issue and legal proceedings were also initiated. Due to increasing controversies, the release of the film kept getting postponed again and again.

After a long wait, after the necessary formalities were completed, ‘Rang Rasiya’ was released in theaters in the year 2014. However, despite the delay in release, the film attracted the attention of audiences and critics due to its theme and presentation. Randeep Hooda’s performance was particularly appreciated, as he portrayed a complex and sensitive character effectively on screen.

Actress Nandana Sen also appeared in an important role in the film. Many scenes filmed between the two actors were already a topic of discussion. The aim of the film was to show the life of an artist, his creative freedom and his confrontation with society. For this reason, its story also sparks discussion on topics like balance between art, freedom of expression and social beliefs.

  • In an interview, Randeep Hooda had also admitted that the film had to wait a long time due to censorship and controversies. He believed that the controversies definitely increased people’s curiosity about the film, but the most important thing was that the audience finally got the opportunity to see the story. ‘Rang Rasiya’ is still counted among those films which made a distinct identity in the history of Indian cinema due to its subject matter, artistic presentation and censor related controversies.
