Fluctuations were seen again in the prices of gold and silver on Tuesday, August 25. According to the latest data of India Bullion and Jewelers Association (IBJA), the price of 10 grams of 24 carat gold has increased by Rs 190 to Rs 1,62,000.
On the other hand, a decline has been recorded in the price of silver. One kg of silver has become cheaper by Rs 1,945 to Rs 2,43,000. That is, today, while there has been a slight increase in the gold rate, there has been a softening in the silver price. Keep in mind that these are the rates issued by IBJA, which do not include GST and jewelery making charges. So when you buy jewelery from jewellers, your final bill may be slightly higher than this.
Gold has become costlier by Rs 29 thousand so far in 2026
Since the beginning of the year 2026, there has been a continuous rise in the prices of gold. On December 31, 2025, the price of 10 grams of gold was Rs 1,33,000, which has now increased to Rs 1,62,000. This means that so far this year, the price of gold has increased by about Rs 29 thousand.
Similarly, silver has also become costlier than the beginning of the year. On December 31, 2025, one kg silver was available for Rs 2,30,000, which is now being sold at Rs 2,43,000. That means an increase of about Rs 13 thousand has been recorded in silver till now.
However, during this period, sharp fluctuations were also seen in both the precious metals. On January 29, 2026, gold had touched its all-time high of Rs 1,76,000 per 10 grams. On this historic day, silver also made an all-time high record of Rs 3,86,000 per kg.
How far can gold and silver prices reach by December?
Regarding investment in gold in the coming months, the market's eyes are fixed on the global conditions and purchases by central banks around the world. According to Anindya Banerjee, Senior Vice President and Commodity Research Head, Kotak Securities, along with common investors, central banks around the world are also giving strong support to gold prices. These also include the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is continuously buying gold to increase its gold reserves.
Experts believe that if tension and uncertainty persist at the global level, the bullish trend in gold may continue. According to the current circumstances, gold can touch the figure of Rs 1.70 lakh per 10 grams by December this year. At the same time, if the conditions remain favourable, silver may rise once again and its price is expected to reach Rs 3 lakh per kg.
What is the difference between 24, 22 and 18 carat gold?
Whenever you go to buy gold, just looking at the gold rate of that day is not enough. Depending on the purity of gold, its price is determined differently.
First of all, let's talk about 24 carat gold, which is considered the purest and has about 99.9% purity. It is mainly used for investments, gold bars or coins. Whereas 22 carat gold contains about 91.6% pure gold and the remaining part is of other metals, which gives it strength. It is mostly used in making jewellery. If we talk about 18 carat gold, it contains 75% pure gold and the rest is mixed with other metals. It is also used in making jewellery.
Therefore, while shopping at the shop, always ask how many carats the jewelery you are buying is and what is the rate charged per 10 grams.
Keep these 3 things in mind while buying jewellery.
The first and most important thing while purchasing jewelery is to always buy BIS Hallmarked gold. Hallmark guarantees the purity of gold. The alphanumeric number given with hallmarking (like AZ4524) provides complete information about the identity and purity of gold.
Secondly, before going to the shop, definitely check the live gold rate of that day. Cross check the rates for 24, 22 and 18 carats from trusted platforms like IBJA and then compare it with the price offered by the jeweler.
The third important thing is related to making charges. Making charges i.e. labor for making jewelery is also added to the total price of jewellery, which may vary from shop to shop. Therefore, before making the bill, definitely ask for a complete breakup of making charges and labor cost. If you are making a big purchase, these charges can be negotiated a little, which can result in significant savings on your final bill.
