Rupali Ganguly Hits Out At Dhruv Rathee Over PM Modi Remark: ‘India Doesn’t Need YouTuber Ws Spokesperson’

Actor and BJP member Rupali Ganguly has strongly criticised YouTuber Dhruv Rathee over his controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding her voice to the growing political debate surrounding Rathee’s recent social media post.

The controversy began after Dhruv Rathee allegedly wrote on X that PM Modi “deserves to be humiliated wherever he goes” while referring to criticism and questioning faced by the Prime Minister during his recent Europe visit. Rathee’s comments quickly sparked strong reactions online from political supporters, critics and public personalities.

Responding to the remarks, Rupali Ganguly posted a sharp statement on social media defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi and criticising Rathee’s comments. The actor stated that India does not require “a YouTuber” to represent or speak on behalf of the country internationally.

In her reaction, Rupali wrote that millions of Indians “love, admire and trust” PM Modi and argued that calling for the humiliation of the country’s Prime Minister abroad was inappropriate.

The actor’s statement quickly went viral online and triggered intense discussion across X, Instagram and political discussion forums. Supporters of Rupali praised her for defending the Prime Minister and speaking against what they described as disrespectful political rhetoric.

Several users online argued that criticism of governments and leaders is acceptable in a democracy but publicly encouraging humiliation of the Prime Minister internationally crosses a line. Others supported Dhruv Rathee’sDhruv Rathee’s right to criticise political leadership strongly, saying dissent and accountability are part of democratic discourse.

The exchange has now become part of a larger online debate involving nationalism, free speech and political criticism in the digital era.

Dhruv Rathee, one of India’s most-followed political YouTubers, is known for creating videos on politics, misinformation, governance and public policy. His content frequently criticises the Narendra Modi-led government and has often drawn backlash from BJP supporters and right-wing commentators.

Rathee’s latest remarks were reportedly linked to Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng questioning PM Modi during a recent public interaction abroad. The incident quickly became a major discussion point online, with supporters and critics debating media accountability and political transparency.

Rupali Ganguly’s reaction comes just days after actor Gul Panag also criticised Rathee’s remarks and said mocking India’s Prime Minister on foreign soil “diminishes the institution.”

Unlike Gul Panag, however, Rupali Ganguly’s response carried a more direct political tone. The actor officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024 and has publicly expressed support for PM Modi multiple times since entering politics.

After joining BJP, Rupali had stated that PM Modi’s development agenda inspired her to participate more actively in public life and politics.

The latest controversy has once again highlighted how entertainment personalities and digital creators increasingly influence India’s political conversations online. Statements made by actors, influencers and YouTubers now routinely trigger nationwide debates within hours on social media platforms.

Rupali Ganguly herself remains among India’s most recognised television stars because of her lead role in the hit TV show Anupamaa. She is also widely known for earlier projects such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Sanjivani and Parvarrish.

Her popularity on television has significantly amplified the reach of her political and social media statements over the past few years.

Following her latest comments, hashtags related to Rupali Ganguly, Dhruv Rathee and PM Modi began trending online. Clips and screenshots from the exchange were widely circulated across entertainment and political pages.

Some social media users accused celebrities and influencers of unnecessarily escalating political polarisation online. Others argued that public figures have every right to express their political opinions openly.

The debate also reflects the increasingly blurred line between entertainment, politics and digital activism in India’s social media ecosystem. Actors, YouTubers and influencers now often function as political voices capable of shaping public discourse far beyond their original fields.

Neither Dhruv Rathee nor Rupali Ganguly appeared to continue the exchange publicly after the actor’s statement went viral. However, discussions around the controversy continued dominating online conversation through Sunday evening.
