Safdarjung Hospital releases Sonam Wangchuk’s first health bulletin – refuses to take medicines

New Delhi, 18 July. Safdarjung Hospital has issued the first health bulletin on Saturday afternoon regarding the health of well-known education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. According to the hospital, he was admitted to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police at 7.40 am today. At present his condition is stable, although symptoms of dehydration have been found in him.

No history of fainting: Hospital

According to the hospital, Sonam Wangchuk was not consuming solid food for the last 20 days. He complained of general weakness, but there was no history of fainting. He was fully conscious at the time of admission. His pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation were found normal. Investigations revealed low serum potassium levels along with dehydration. Blood sugar was recorded at 78 mg/dL.

IV Refused to take fluids and medicines

It was also informed in the health bulletin that blood gas test showed signs of compensated acidosis. At the time of admission, urine ketone was 1+, which increased to 3+ by afternoon. Doctors advised him to take intravenous (IV) fluids, oral rehydration fluids and other medicines. At present he has refused to take all types of treatment. The medical team of the hospital is continuously monitoring him and counseling him to accept the treatment.

Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali demands his discharge from the hospital., raised many questions

Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J Angmo has demanded immediate discharge of her husband from the hospital. He has also raised questions on the hospital management. Geetanjali said in the X Post, ‘The report of Safdarjung Hospital says that Sonam Wangchuk’s potassium level is 2.9, whereas only yesterday it was 4.3. They are neither allowing us to take them to any other lab to get a second opinion nor are they giving us their blood samples in our presence so that we can get them tested elsewhere.

She said, ‘I have been waiting for the last three hours, but they have not yet listened to us. This lack of transparency is making us suspicious. We have asked for immediate discharge so that we can take him to a hospital where we have better confidence. She said that she has been waiting for the hospital’s response for the last two hours.

Delhi Police took him from the protest site to the hospital

It is noteworthy that Sonam Wangchuk was sitting on a hunger strike during the ongoing agitation at Jantar Mantar in the national capital under the banner of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). When his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his fast, Delhi Police took him to the hospital.

Delhi Police issued a statement saying that he was admitted to the hospital as per the instructions of the High Court and the advice of specialist doctors. While being taken to the hospital, some protesters protested at the protest site, due to which there was chaos for some time. However, the police exercised restraint and completed the entire operation peacefully.
