On Tuesday, DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka told a press conference that the film ‘Sutlej’ is based on the struggling life of Jaswant Singh Khalra and how he brought the truth to the society.
Kalka said, “Khalra brought the truth of about 25,000 bodies cremated as ‘unclaimed’ to the world. He raised this issue not only at the national but also at the international level. It is wrong to try to suppress the story of such a person and due to this there is a wave of anger in the Sikh community.”
Along with this, DSGMC has taken a big decision to make the film reach more people. The committee has instructed all its gurdwara members to download the film and screen it publicly in their areas. Kalka also said that seminars will be organized on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra in schools and colleges.
Diljit Dosanjh plays the role of Jaswant Singh Khalra in ‘Sutlej’. Khalra, who worked in a bank, later became a human rights activist and exposed cases of alleged fake encounters and secret funerals in Punjab in the 1980s-90s. He was kidnapped and went missing in 1995. Nearly ten years later, four Punjab Police officers were convicted in his kidnapping, torture and murder. However, his body has not been found till date.

Notably, the original title of this film was ‘Punjab 95’. The film was stuck for almost four years as the Censor Board suggested as many as 120 cuts. After that, it was released on ZEE5 on July 3 without any cuts under the new title ‘Sutlej’. However, in just two days, on July 5, it was removed from the platform. ZEE5 gave the reason behind this as “some developments”, while according to some media reports, the alleged violation of IT rules is being said to be the reason behind the removal of the film.
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding ‘Sutlej’ has intensified due to the DSGMC’s decision, and everyone’s attention is on what happens in this matter in the coming days.
