Second-Generation BMW iX3 (Based On Vision Neue Klasse X) Electric SUV Patented In India

BMW has filed a patent for the Vision Neue Klasse X-based second-generation iX3 electric SUV in India. BMW first showcased the Vision Neue Klasse X concept in March 2024. It previewed the design of the second-generation iX3. Patent filings dated 15/5/2024 now indicate that the second-generation iX3 will soon be brought to India.

BMW plans to draw clear visual differentiation between the Neue Klasse sedans and future electric SUVs. According to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, the Neue Klasse concepts collectively demonstrate the breadth of the brand’s future portfolio.

The second-generation iX3 is the first Neue Klasse-based model. It is dimensionally similar to the first generation, but is underpinned by the new EV-specific platform. It has a completely new software ecosystem powered by four high-performance computers.

The Neue Klasse X has unique styling. It has a kidney grille, LED lighting, traditional cladding, badges, L-shaped tail lamps, and BMW roundel laser-etched onto the bonnet. The C-pillar has the signature Hofmeister kink and even a unique reflective surface treatment. This can be seen in the patent images as well.

Instead of the conventional plastic cladding, the concept had components made from recycled mono-materials. These are more sustainable and cost effective.

The interior of the Vision Neue Klasse X is more concept-like. The cabin has a large touchscreen infotainment system, BMW’s new Panoramic Vision display, 3D head-up display, a redesigned steering wheel with haptic controls, and other features. The cabin uses plant- and mineral-based materials and recycled marine plastics.

Yes, the production form of second-generation iX3 is not a major departure from the Neue Klasse X concept. It retains almost all of the concept’s design cues. The exterior styling remains mostly the same. India will get the long wheelbase version, with a wheelbase of 3,006mm.

The interior is clean and minimal. The concept-like aesthetic has been adapted into a more production-ready one. The second-generation iX3 will also be a five-seater. Physical controls will be available for all basic functions. Several key functions will be controlled by voice commands as well.

The feature list will include width-wide Panoramic Vision system, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, BMW’s Operating System X, panoramic glass roof and more. The M-Sport versions also feature sport seats, M-specific steering wheel and more. The iX3 will have a boot capacity of 520 litres. The frunk will be able to accommodate another 58 litres.

The second-generation iX3 will be baked on the Neue Klasse platform and will feature the carmaker’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. It will have two electric motors and round lithium-ion battery cells instead of prismatic units. The new batteries are claimed to be 20% more energy dense. The e-SUV will be based on an 800V electrical architecture.

The tyres and braking system have also been optimized specifically for this product. The overall efficiency is expected to go up by 25%. The driving range could increase by roughly 30%. The charging speeds will also increase on the new iX3. 10 minutes at a suitable fast charger will be able to replenish charge required to run 300 km. Even the first generation iX3 supports charging speeds of 150kW.

The new SUV will utilize four high-performance computers to manage all dynamic driving functions. Another dedicated system will handle ADAS features. The Neue Klasse platform can support up to four electric motors.
