Shattuck St. Mary’s Vietnam brings U.S. education to Hai Phong

Located in Hai Phong, the school was developed in partnership with Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, an independent boarding school in Minnesota with a history dating back more than a century.

The project was founded by a graduate of the U.S. institution’s Class of 1995, who said her experience as a student helped shape the vision for bringing the model to Vietnam. The school’s Admissions Director is also an alumna of Shattuck St. Mary’s School in the United States, from the Class of 1992, further strengthening the connection between the Vietnam campus and the Minnesota institution.

As the only official partner of the Minnesota-based school in Vietnam, the campus follows academic programs and educational practices developed by its U.S. counterpart. A joint board comprising representatives from both institutions oversees operations, while leadership teams from the United States make annual visits to support quality assurance and academic collaboration.

Instruction is delivered entirely in English, with an American curriculum built around critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving, qualities American admissions officers look for in applicants.

Signature program offerings include golf, fine arts, and weCreate, a proprietary program centered around creativity and experiential learning.

The campus is built to support a range of programs; classrooms and science laboratories, STEM labs, The Kettering Library, and a 600-seat auditorium, as well as Kim Residence Hall for boarding students from Grades 9-12. Sports infrastructure includes a regulation-sized 25-meter indoor swimming pool, football fields, basketball and tennis courts, pickleball facilities, fitness spaces, and golf training centers.

According to the school, the boarding program combines supervised study, community living, and student support services to help students develop independence, communication skills, and personal responsibility. All students remain under strict supervision of multiple Dorm Parents while living in the dormitory.

Golf is one of the institution’s specialized development pathways. Students have access to on-campus training facilities and instruction from a professional coach, with programs designed for learners ranging from beginners to competitive prospective collegiate athletes.

School representatives said the program aims to help students balance academics and sports while exploring university admission opportunities that may include athletic recruitment, scholarships, and holistic admissions pathways.

The launch comes as demand for international education continues to grow in Vietnam, particularly in major urban and industrial centers ranging from Hai Phong toward Quang Ninh, Ha Long, and beyond. Through its partnership with the U.S. school, the Hai Phong campus aims to provide students with an American-style educational experience, while its location near Cat Bi International Airport Vietnam and Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway enables Shattuck St. Mary’s International School Vietnam to serve families across Vietnam and the broader Asian region.
