Joy Warns India That Bangladesh Became Pakistan: After a two-year-long exile, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy have given their first major public address. During this, both the leaders launched a scathing attack on the policies of the current interim government and made serious allegations. They claimed that militant elements are getting open protection in the country due to which the security system has completely collapsed.
Hasina addressed the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia via video conferencing in New Delhi, while Joy joined from the United States. Both alleged that Bangladesh’s current political stance is increasingly moving towards Pakistan. The release of banned militants from jails poses a grave threat to peace in the entire region.
A major threat to India from terrorism
Sajeeb Wazed Joy categorically warned that under Muhammad Yunus’s leadership, Bangladesh has now become “another Pakistan,” a matter of grave concern for India. He recalled that during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, she consistently took strict action against anti-India elements and militants. However, the situation has changed since the change of power in August 2014.
There have been reports of a resumption of political and diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan since the change of government in Dhaka. Joy alleged that violent protesters who killed policemen have been given a free hand and have not been prosecuted. Such concessions are institutionalizing extremism within the country.
A major controversy over the crumbling economy and deaths
Hasina’s former ICT advisor, Joy, claimed that the country’s economy has completely collapsed under the new regime and that the country is on its way to becoming a “rogue state.” He alleged that brutal killings in police custody continued even after Hasina’s ouster, and that the current government has legalized political killings effective August 5, 2024.
Joy also raised serious questions about the significant discrepancy in the death toll from the violent protests of July-August 2024. While the UN report claimed a total of 1,400 deaths, the interim government has recorded only 800. He appealed to the international media to uncover the truth and ask who the remaining 600 people were.
