Shekhar Suman revealed his political secret, said – was a member of BJP only for 24 hours
The combination of Indian politics and entertainment has always given rise to controversies. A few weeks ago, well-known actor and host Shekhar Suman made a revelation in his talk show ‘Shekhar Tonite’. His very sharp monologue in this show has created a stir even in the political circles of the country. In this show, Shekhar Suman talked about a ‘king’ who ‘broke the mirror’ due to the fear of revealing the bitter truth about himself. The metaphor was so effective that even the main opposition Congress shared it on its ax handle and asked: ‘Who is this king? Why did he break the mirror?’ This one incident not only sparked debate on social media, but also proved how much power political satire has even in today’s era.
BJP membership only for 24 hours
When Shekhar Suman was talked to about this sharp speech and his political inclination, he replied in his usual outspoken style. People often speculate about his political past, but Shekhar Suman considers it a ‘forced deal’. Shekhar Suman revealed that his political journey was not part of any bigger agenda. He said, ‘I was a member of BJP only for 24 hours. Sometimes situations are not under your control and you are forced to take such decisions which you actually do not want to do.
This was not the first time that Shekhar was caught in the whirlpool of politics. Earlier in the year 2011, he had contested elections against Shatrughan Sinha on Congress ticket, where he had to face defeat. Shekhar considers himself a ‘reluctant candidate’ and even today wonders why he contested that election.? For him, politics was never a full-time career, but a diversion that he has left behind.
Why is it important to remain ‘neutral’?
Shekhar Suman believes that the biggest secret of the success of shows like ‘Shekhar Tonight’ or ‘Movers and Shakers’ is that they are non-political. As a professional host his approach is clear. You cannot do political satire by following any one ideology (leftist or rightist). Making fun of politicians and belittling them are two different things. The things said in the show are actually a humorous version of the socio-political reality published in newspapers.
When even arch rivals become brothers
Often the public sees politicians throwing mud at each other and shouting on TV. But Shekhar Suman confirmed what veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar had said while leaving the Rajya Sabha, ‘behind the scenes, leaders are very friendly’. Shekhar Suman laughingly says that even though leaders have to present their party’s position strongly in front of the camera, personally there is a human side to them. They enjoy brotherhood and friendship among themselves. It is just like if two countries are friends, but they cannot compromise on their duty on the battlefield.
