Use of lemon is common for cleaning brass and copper idols. The natural acid present in lemon can help remove dirt and some stains from the metal surface. However, lemon should not be left on the idol for too long. Strong acidic substances can cause harm especially to old, carved or painted idols. After cleaning, the idol should be washed thoroughly with clean water and immediately dried with a soft cloth.

To clean a brass statue, first remove the dust with a dry soft cloth or a very soft brush. After this, the surface can be cleaned with a cloth by mixing a little mild soap in lukewarm water. For stubborn grime, a mild paste can be made by mixing a little baking soda with lemon juice, but it is better to test it on a small and inconspicuous part of the statue first. Instead of rubbing the paste vigorously, apply it gently and wash it off after some time.

A green or dark layer may appear on copper over time. In such a situation, lemon and some salt are used as traditional home remedies. It can be applied lightly on the surface. Excessive rubbing or use of rough scrubbers may scratch the statue. After cleaning, thoroughly remove moisture with a dry cloth by washing thoroughly with water.
Be careful while decorating Laddu Gopal
If colour, polish, cloth or decorative work has been done on the Laddu Gopal idol, then do not use any kind of strong cleaner or household chemical on the entire idol. Clean the eyes, face painting and decorative parts especially carefully. After bathing and cleaning, dry the idol thoroughly and wear new clothes and jewellery.
It is not necessary to polish every statue
The natural coating on old statues is not always dirt. Sometimes it may be part of the oxidation of the metal or the old finish. Therefore, it is not advisable to keep scrubbing again and again just to get more shine. Especially on very old or traditional sculptures, preserving the surface is more important than polishing. While preparing for the puja on Janmashtami, it is equally important to protect the original surface and decoration of the idol along with cleanliness.
