Shubhendu Adhikari meets Governor: Claims to form government in West Bengal, will take oath as CM on Saturday
Kolkata. Bharatiya Janata Dal (BJP) leader Subhendu Adhikari met Governor RN Ravi at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Friday. The officer met the Governor and staked claim to form the government. Many big leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee and Tapas Roy were present along with Subhendu Adhikari.
With the election of Shubhendu Adhikari as the leader of the legislative party, the speculations about the face for the post of Chief Minister in West Bengal came to an end. The name of Shubhendu Adhikari has been finalized for the post of Chief Minister. Suvendu has been elected leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Legislative Party.
Shubhendu Adhikari’s name was approved in the legislature party meeting held in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In such a situation, it has been decided that Suvendu Adhikari will become the new Chief Minister of Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari was considered the strongest candidate for the post of Chief Minister after defeating Trinamool Chief Mamata Banerjee by 15 thousand votes from the hot seat of Bhawanipur Assembly.
According to BJP, Suvendu will take oath as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal at the historic Brigade Parade Ground on May 9, i.e. on the occasion of Rabindra Jayanti. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has now officially become the former Chief Minister of West Bengal. This situation arose when Governor R.N. Ravi announced dissolution of the state assembly. This also means that the previous state cabinet led by Mamata Banerjee has also automatically ended.
In a press conference on May 5 after the election results, then CM Mamata Banerjee had said that she would not follow the tradition of submitting her resignation to the Governor, as she felt that the official results did not reflect the actual public opinion. In this way she made it clear that she was neither accepting the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the whole of West Bengal nor her personal defeat from Bhawanipur assembly constituency.
