The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued directions to Chief Electoral Officers of multiple States and Union Territories to initiate the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of photo electoral rolls.
The exercise will be conducted under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, taking January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date.
The directive applies directly to Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.
The revision aims to ensure the inclusion of left-out, young, and first-time eligible voters, while also accepting advance applications for three subsequent qualifying dates in 2027 (April 1, July 1, and October 1).
For States and UTs where Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is currently underway or recently concluded — including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Odisha, among others — the ECI noted that the SSR schedule will be announced separately at a later date.
Additionally, roll revision schedules for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh will be issued in due course, keeping seasonal weather conditions in mind.
