198 foreigners including 173 Indians arrested on cyber crime charges in Sri Lanka, last

Srilanka: As part of the campaign against cyber crime in Sri Lanka, the police have taken major action and arrested a total of 198 foreigners including 173 Indian citizens. This action was taken late on Monday night in the southern tourist areas of Galle, Hikkaduwa and Midigama. 25 Nepali citizens are also among those arrested.

According to the police, the age of most of the arrested people is between 25 to 35 years. Initial investigation has revealed that many people were living and working illegally in Sri Lanka even after the expiry of their tourist visas. Apart from this, duty-free imported cigarettes have also been found with some people. Officials say that all will be booked for their involvement in cyber crime related activities.

Foreign nationals have been caught before too

This action has taken place at a time when last week itself the Sri Lankan Police had arrested about 250 Chinese citizens in similar cases. Following the continuous cases, security agencies have tightened surveillance on the activities of foreign nationals.

According to police data, from the beginning of this year till May 5, a total of 628 foreign nationals have been arrested in cases related to cyber crime. These include citizens of India, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines and Cambodia. Sri Lankan administration says that the campaign to stop cyber fraud and online crimes will continue.
