While the Ashes will naturally be one of the biggest highlights of his tenure, Fleming stressed that his plans go beyond major series. England's first assignment under him will be against South Africa in the winter, followed by a focus on the home Ashes series.
As a New Zealander, Fleming has followed the Ashes throughout his cricketing life and admitted that being part of this historic competition would be a major highlight. However, he also identified the development of the England team identity as an immediate priority. Working closely with Joe Root on England's identity
Fleming has already started working with Test captain Joe Root as he tries to set the foundation for his tenure. The new coach said that the initial discussions are not only focused on winning matches but also on ensuring that England present themselves in the best possible manner.
“I've started the process. I've been in great touch with Joe, and even during this trip we've done some things to get this thing started,” Fleming added.

“That was one thing that probably will hurt him (McCullum) a little bit (the underperformance) – I think he feels the same way I feel now, that an opportunity is around the corner. He was also realistic about what happened and was just very honest,” Fleming added.
