Strict action should be taken against those guilty of attack on journalists -: NUJ

Patna, 23 July. Nationalist Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bihar has strongly condemned the attacks on journalists in Delhi and Patna and demanded strict action against the culprits. The organization has appealed to the Central and State Governments to ensure the safety of journalists and to identify the attackers and take strict legal action against them.

In a press release issued on Thursday, NUJ Bihar State President Rakesh Praveer and General Secretary Krishnakant Ojha said that the incidents of assault, abuse and misbehavior with journalists during the coverage of the agitation at Parliament House in Delhi on July 20 and the student demonstration in Patna on July 22 are highly condemnable. He said that the media has given fair and positive coverage of various movements including the paper leak case and the Parliament march, yet the misbehavior with journalists, especially women journalists and cameramen, is contrary to democratic values.

The organization said that even if the people who misbehaved were not protesters, it was still the responsibility of the organizers of the movement to fix accountability for such incidents. NUJ Bihar has demanded from the government to identify the elements who assault, misbehave and misbehave with the journalists and take strict action against them and also to compensate for the loss of damaged cameras and other equipment.
