Subhadeep Ghosh is the new fielding coach of the India men’s cricket team, as he replaced T Dilip ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 15. The BCCI had given Dilip a one-year contract for his second stint with the national team. He rejoined the team for the five-match Test series against England in 2025. However, his contract was not renewed once the previous deal expired.
Dilip came on board in 2021 and remained until the end of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His second spell started after recommendations from one of the star Indian players. However, the fielding standards dropped, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India decided to part ways with him.
The 57-year-old Ghosh is an experienced campaigner, having previously worked with the India women’s team as a fielding coach for two years. During his association with the Men in Blue, he was a member of the support staff in the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup and the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Ghosh has also given his services to India A and was the head coach of Assam’s team in domestic cricket. Before working as a coach, he played for Assam and Railways. He competed in 17 first-class matches and 17 List A games.
The SL vs IND series opener is scheduled to be played in Galle on August 15, while the second and final Test will start on August 23 at the SSC in Colombo. Ahead of the bilateral assignment against the host nation, India will play a three-day practice match against a Local XI in Colombo starting August 7. India need a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka to stand a chance of making it to the World Test Championship Final in the ongoing 2025-27 cycle.
Nine Tests remain, and the Shubman Gill-led team must secure victories in seven. There are two Tests each against Lanka and New Zealand, while Australia will visit India for five red-ball matches.
Meanwhile, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has also stepped down after the white-ball matches against England. He has become the Head of Cricket Strategy with IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
