Successful trial of Kaveri Dry Engine in Russia, achieved dry thrust of 48.5 kg Newton; Ghatak Stealth Drone will get indigenous power

India's indigenous Kaveri Dry Engine has achieved important achievements during high-altitude and flight trials in Russia. According to reports, the engine achieved a dry thrust of 48.5 kilo newtons (kN), while its target was around 46 kN. This engine has been developed by DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and this achievement is important because this engine will become the main power source of India's upcoming DRDO lethal stealth drone.

High-altitude and flight test conducted in Russia

The Kaveri Dry engine was tested in harsh conditions in Russia. In high-altitude trials, the engine proved its performance in high altitude areas. It remained stable and effective even in flight trials. Achieving more thrust than the target shows that the design and engineering of the engine is strong.

The dry version means it does not have an afterburner, which is suitable for platforms such as drones where stable and economical thrust is required over long periods of time. The Kaveri program was facing challenges for a long time, but this achievement of the dry version is giving a new direction to the project.

Why is Kaveri important for Ghatak Stealth Drone?

Dry Version of Kaveri works without Afterburner. This configuration is suitable for UAV and UCAV platforms where reliable and efficient thrust over long periods of time is critical. DRDO's Ghatak is an indigenous Stealth Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle program for which the domestic powerplant holds strategic importance.

Now turn for CEMILAC certification

The next important step after the Russian tests is to obtain airworthiness clearance from the Center for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC). After this, integration of the engine with Ghatak and further testing will be important.

This advancement of Kaveri Dry Engine is an important step for India's indigenous aero-engine technology. In case of successful certification and production, it could also provide an indigenous powerplant option for future UAV and UCAV programmes.
