Supreme Court's order: Vehicles of drivers who do not pay e-challan will be confiscated. Country and abroad – REVOI

New Delhi, 1 October 2026: The Supreme Court has turned a red eye against the drivers across the country who have not paid the e-challan amount for violation of traffic rules. In an important judgment, the Supreme Court has clarified that if a driver fails to pay the remaining e-challan amount, the police can seize his vehicle. The court had noted that around Rs. E-challans amounting to more than Rs 23,000 crore are yet to be recovered, which is extremely important to be recovered.

'S. During the hearing of the case 'Rajasekaran vs Union of India', the bench had observed that merely issuing e-challan does not solve the problem. Giving strict instructions to all the states and union territories, the court said that vehicles should be checked on the roads on a random basis and necessary action should be taken to confiscate those vehicles which have more than one outstanding license.

According to the data presented by the Central Government in the Supreme Court, till now a total of Rs. E-challan worth Rs 49000 crore has been issued. Of which Rs. Rs 26000 crore has been recovered, but still Rs. More than Rs 23000 crore is yet to be recovered.

  • On which vehicles will the sword of confiscation hang?

Frequent violators: Those drivers who do not pay the fine despite issuing e-challan repeatedly or have more than one challan pending, the police will be able to seize their vehicles.
Seizure during random checking: Police will be able to do random checking of vehicles on the road. If during investigation any remaining challan is found on the vehicle, the vehicle will be confiscated on the spot.

  • These strict measures will also be implemented for recovery

The Supreme Court has ordered the states to take additional strict measures to recover the challan amount, which includes freezing online services related to vehicles. Ban on ownership transfer of vehicle. Refusal to provide vehicle fitness certificate and PUC (Pollution Under Control). Also blacklisting the concerned vehicle on the transport portal.
