New Delhi. India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test played in Galle to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. This was India's 600th test match. The hero of India's victory was 24-year-old left arm spinner Manav Suthar. He took 10 wickets in the match, including 6 wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings. Devdutt Padikkal was adjudged player of the match. He scored a total of 211 runs in this match. Padikkal scored 167 runs in the first innings and 44 runs in the second innings.

On Wednesday, the fifth day of the match, Sri Lanka's score in the second innings was 199 runs for 6 wickets in 75 overs. Suthar almost sealed India's victory by taking three wickets in the next over. In this over, Suthar dismissed Sonal Dinusha, Prabhat Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara. Sri Lanka's score became 199 runs for 9 wickets. Suthar wrapped up Sri Lanka's innings by dismissing Keshara Nuwantha in his next over.

Padikkal's century in the first innings, India scored 462 runs
India won the toss and decided to bat first. Devdutt Padikkal came at number three and scored 167 runs in 230 balls. There were 15 fours and one six in his innings. He made a partnership of 162 runs with KL Rahul. KL Rahul scored 82, Dhruv Jurel scored 51 and Rishabh Pant scored 39 runs. India scored 462 runs. For Sri Lanka, Prabhat Jayasuriya took 4 wickets and Keshara Nuwantha took 3 wickets.

Dinusha's century in Sri Lanka's first innings
Sonal Dinusha scored 100 runs in 168 balls in Sri Lanka's first innings. Niroshan Dickwella played an inning of 80 runs. For India, Manav Suthar took 4 wickets and Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets. Sri Lanka could score 284 runs in the first innings.
Pant scored 66 runs in the second innings
India's second innings was reduced to 193 runs. Rishabh Pant scored 66 runs in 69 balls. He hit 8 fours and 2 sixes. Apart from Pant, KL Rahul scored 35 and Padikkal scored 44 runs. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando took 4 wickets, Prabhat Jayasuriya took 3 wickets and Lahiru Kumara took 2 wickets.
