Telegram ‘locked’ in India, will the company have a big impact? Know in detail
Telegram Ban Impact: The temporary ban on Telegram in India will remain in effect till June 22. Hearing the company’s petition, the Delhi High Court refused to consider the government’s order arbitrary or unreasonable. Telegram, a messaging platform facing a ban in India, has not received any relief from the court. How exactly and how much will this affect Telegram? Let’s know in detail.

What did the court say?
Dismissing Telegram’s plea, the Delhi High Court said the government’s decision to impose the ban cannot be termed arbitrary. This decision of the High Court is being considered as a big blow for Telegram. It is to be noted that the government had ordered to shut down Telegram by June 22 and disable its message-editing feature by June 30. This was done to curb the racket of copying and paper-footing in the NEET-UG 2026 exam, which the company had challenged by filing a petition in the Delhi High Court.
How many users of Telegram in India?
Telegram has 104 million to 150 million active users in India, making India its largest market globally. So, if the ban is in effect only till June 22, there will be no immediate direct impact on the company’s revenue. But during this period, in-app ad revenue in India will completely stop. Telegram has millions of paid users in India. The ban on the app has stalled new subscriptions, affecting the company’s cash flow.
India’s IT ministry banned Telegram for one week because some users shared leaked exam questions.
This punishes 150M+ ordinary Telegram users in India — not the insiders who leaked the exam materials.
And the ban hasn’t stopped anything. The leaks just moved to other apps.

Breach of investor confidence
Telegram is already a loss-making company. Compared to a projected revenue of $870 million in early 2025, the company has lost more than $220 million. Now, a ban in India will reduce the company’s credibility among global investors. The Company may experience difficulties in obtaining funding in the future, which is likely to negatively impact its market valuation.
The company’s CEO, Pavel Durov, said of the Telegram ban, “The consequences of this ban will be felt by Telegram’s 150 million users in India, not the people at the company who leaked the documents. The information will not stop; the ban will only force scammers to turn to other apps.”
