The dispute escalated further when the Bangladesh Border Security Force directly accused the Indian Border Security Force of firing on civilians trying to infiltrate the border. Following this action, there has been high tension on both sides and widespread unrest among local residents, making the situation at the border sensitive.
BSF Action and Smuggler’s Death
Tara Mia, who was killed in BSF firing, has been identified as a resident of Murichara slum in Kulauari. According to Border Guard Bangladesh, Tara Mia and his companions were attempting to smuggle contraband into Indian territory from the Kulauari border at around 4 a.m. on Sunday.
The slain smuggler, Tara Mia, already had several cases registered against him for smuggling animals and goods. According to Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmood, when a group of smugglers entered the Indian border, the BSF opened fire, killing Tara Mia. This action has escalated the border dispute.
Abduction of an Indian Citizen and Demand for Revenge
Prior to this incident, tensions escalated on the border in Bangladesh’s Panchagarh district on Saturday when locals kidnapped an Indian citizen. The abducted man, Dipankar Gop, is a resident of Rajganj in Jalpaiguri, India, and is currently in the custody of locals.
Local Bangladeshis claim they took Dipankar Gop hostage in retaliation for the kidnapping of seventy-eight-year-old Bangladeshi farmer Tameez Uddin, who was apprehended by the BSF on Wednesday. Tameez Uddin had gone near the Birajot border while searching for his cow, where he was detained by the BSF.

Failed reconciliation attempt and flag meeting
According to Bangladeshi media, Indian citizen Dipankar Gop was apprehended Saturday morning while entering a sugarcane field near sub-pillar 12 of pillar 742 at the Birajot border. A flag meeting was held between company commanders of both countries to resolve the crisis, but no solution was reached.
This incident has increased tensions on the India-Bangladesh border, putting security forces on both sides on high alert. Diplomatic experts believe that such disputes must be resolved quickly, otherwise they could pose a serious threat to regional peace and bilateral relations.
