Faced with death, Derek Parker Agananga, the teenager, refused to let go of his grandfather and brother who died in the accident.
It is known that the teenager, a resident of the Savunga area of Alaska, went fishing in the sea with his younger cousin and grandfather on September 5. Their boat met with an accident there. A fishing line got entangled with the propeller and the boat was crippled. In this situation, they tried to get down in the water and release the rope but they did not succeed. Meanwhile, the boat capsized due to bad weather. In this dire situation, the three somehow manage to stay close to the overturned boat. However, the situation became serious with time in that freezing cold. Derek's grandfather Sidney died after being trapped under the boat. Burton, the second cousin, also drowned.

After the rescue, the teenager was airlifted for emergency treatment. When the family members were informed, they also attended the hospital. Although Derek survived, the US Coast Guard expressed grief over the deaths of the two sailors. The Coast Guard thanked everyone who participated in the rescue operation.
