Central government will take back the land of Delhi Gymkhana Club, instructions to vacate the premises by June 5

The Central Government has decided to vacate the prestigious Delhi Gymkhana Club of the capital Delhi. The Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has issued a notice to the club management directing them to vacate the premises by June 5. The government has given the club about 15 days’ time.

Why did the government take this decision?

The letter issued by L&DO said that the 27.3-acre land located at 2, Safdarjung Road was originally given on lease for social and sports activities. However, this area falls in a very sensitive and strategic area of the national capital. The government says that now this land is needed to strengthen defense and administrative infrastructure.

According to the letter, the central government has decided to terminate the lease and take back possession of the land so that it can be used for institutional needs, security infrastructure and projects related to public interest.

Gymkhana Club has historical importance

The history of Delhi Gymkhana Club is linked to the British rule. It was established in the year 1913 with the name of ‘Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club’. After independence the word ‘Imperial’ was dropped from its name.

The club’s current buildings were built in the 1930s. This complex is located in one of the most prestigious and sensitive areas of Lutyens’ Delhi. The Prime Minister’s residence, several central government offices and defense establishments are present around the club, which further increases its strategic importance.
