The increasing tension between America and Iran has now reached India. The Trump administration of America has imposed strict sanctions against 4 India-based companies for importing petroleum and petrochemical products from Iran. The US State Department has issued an official statement informing about this action. Along with this, US Finance Minister Scott Besant has announced 'Operation Economic Outcast' with the aim of economically isolating Iran globally.
Under this special operation, new and tough sanctions have been implemented to completely block Iran's potential revenue sources. America has also advised other countries of the world to immediately end all their economic relations with Iran and has warned of strict punitive action against them if they do not do so.
Indian companies and citizens came under the ban
According to the US State Department, mainly 4 Indian companies and Indian citizens associated with them have come under the scanner of this action.
- Portease Partners LLP: This company operates as a customs broker. Its partners Indrisamiya Ashrafmia Shaikh and Harish Ramchandra Rangi have been banned. They are accused of directly helping in importing several consignments of petrochemical products from Iran.
- Sadashiva Overseas Limited: This company had reportedly imported petroleum products worth about $69 million from Iran.
- PP Softtech Private Limited: This company and its director Prashant Garg have been banned. The company imported Iranian petroleum products worth about $25 million.
- Prakrutees Infra Impex Private Limited: This company had also imported petroleum products worth about $25 million.
According to the US statement, Indrisamiya Ashrafmia Sheikh, Harish Ramchandra Rangi and Prashant Garg are all three Indian citizens. All of them have been blacklisted for knowingly being involved in significant transactions involving purchase, acquisition, sale, transportation or marketing of petroleum or petroleum products from Iran.
America's 'Operation Economic Outcast' and global impact
US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott clarified that Washington has taken this broad action against a number of entities, individuals and vessels that promote activities that destabilize the Iranian regime. These new sanctions are being considered as another major step towards increasing American economic pressure on Iran. Experts believe that this action has been taken at a time when America has allegedly failed to subdue Iran through military action, blockade and threats.
The West Asia Crisis and the Mathematics of the Strait of Hormuz
On the other hand, amid this geopolitical tension, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has held high-level talks with the Iranian leadership in Tehran. In this meeting, there was a special discussion on measures to prevent further spread of the ongoing conflict in West Asia as well as the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
It is noteworthy that the Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea route about 55 kilometers wide located between Iran and Oman, which directly connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. It is one of the busiest and most important maritime oil routes in the world. Before conflict broke out in the region on 28 February, approximately one-fifth (20%) of the world's total global oil production passed through this sea route.
