The International Cricket Ground was built in the same field where potatoes used to grow; Farmer’s son becomes national captain

Knews Desk- There are many stories of passion, hard work and dreams in cricket, but the story of Jersey farmer Jimmy Perchard is different from all these. He converted his potato farm into an international cricket ground and from the same ground his son Charles Perchard emerged as the captain of the country’s national team. Today this ground is not just a stadium but has become a symbol of the success of Jersey cricket. Jimmy Perchard’s dream started in the year 1977. At that time he used to play cricket in the fields in summer with his fellow farmers. There was discussion after every match that they wish they had their own cricket ground. At the time it was just a dream, but Jimmy was determined to make it a reality.

Nearly 26 years later, in 2003, Jimmy obtained legal permission to build a cricket pitch in a potato field near his home. After this, continuous hard work went on for two years and finally in 2005, a cricket match was played on this ground for the first time. The beginning was very simple. There was neither a pavilion, nor a dressing room, nor modern facilities on the field. Players used to change clothes in their cars and tea was prepared in a small portacabin. Gradually the support of local people and sponsors came. Boundaries, sightscreens, club houses and other facilities were developed around the ground. name of this field Farmers Cricket Ground Kept. Today the ground hosts international cricket teams. Teams from many countries including America and Vanuatu have played here and the walls of the club house are decorated with caps, photographs and memorable moments of those teams.

Jimmy’s family got the biggest benefit from this ground. His son Charles Perchard grew up playing cricket on this ground since childhood. Charles, who trains for hours with his father, made his international debut for Jersey in 2010 and became captain of the national team in 2017. This player, who came from a farmer’s field, reached the command of the entire country’s team. Under the captaincy of Charles Perchard, Jersey cricket achieved many historic achievements. Jersey defeated Italy at the Farmers Cricket Ground itself and made it to the ICC T20 World Cup Global Qualifier for the first time. This victory is counted among the biggest achievements in the history of Jersey cricket and this ground played an important role in it.

The Jersey team has been performing continuously in the last few years. The team is currently ranked 29th in the ICC T20 rankings. During qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Jersey missed out on a place in the main tournament by a very narrow margin on net run rate. However, during this campaign, the team showed its potential by defeating a strong team like Scotland. Now Jersey is eyeing the 2028 T20 World Cup. Recently, the team has secured a place in the final qualifying round to be held next year by winning the title of sub-regional qualifier held in Cyprus. If the team performs brilliantly here too, then the dream of playing in the main tournament of the T20 World Cup for the first time can be fulfilled. Jimmy Perchard’s story is an example of the fact that to fulfill big dreams, it does not require big resources, but strong will and continuous hard work. By converting his farm into an international cricket ground, a farmer not only improved his son’s future but also gave a new identity to cricket in the entire country.
