Chennai. Madras High Court has extended the interim stay on issuing notification of by-elections for five assembly seats in Tamil Nadu till September 8. The Election Commission told the court that notification for by-elections on these seats will not be issued until the pending election petitions are decided. The court rejected the petition filed by the TVK Government seeking lifting of the ban. The five assembly seats where by-elections are to be held include Tiruchi East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram and Karur.

What did the Election Commission say?
The Election Commission of India told the Madras High Court that it will not announce by-elections for these five assembly seats until the pending petitions related to the elections are decided. The Election Commission said in its statement that there are no plans to announce by-elections until the matters related to the elections are resolved. Whereas Chief Minister Vijay's side opposed it. The state government has demanded early hearing of the case seeking stay on the by-election.
Stalin challenged the victory of TVK candidate
DMK chief MK Stalin on TVK candidate V.S. Challenging Babu's victory, he has moved the Madras High Court. He has filed a petition citing alleged irregularities in the elections.

Demand for recount of votes
In the petition, Stalin has alleged alleged malfunctions in voting machines and irregularities related to VVPAT machines. He has demanded the High Court to order recount of votes in Kolathur constituency. Stalin appealed to the court against V.S. There is also a demand to declare Babu's election invalid and declare him the winner.
