The painful history of 168 innocent girls is hidden behind this codename of America-Iran peace talks.
The ongoing peace talks between the US and Iran on Swiss soil are at a very emotional and diplomatic juncture. The eyes of the international world are fixed on the Iranian delegation which has been given the codename ‘Minab 168’. This name is not just an identity but a reminder of the 168 schoolgirls who lost their lives in a missile attack. This step of Iran is directly reminding America of the tragedy which they have never been able to forget. ‘Minab 168’ is linked to a painful history According to Iranian Press TV, this codename is dedicated to the dark date of February 28, when Minab school was attacked by an American-Israeli Tomahawk missile on the very first day of the war. 168 school girls were killed in this barbaric attack. By using this name in the talks, Iran has diplomatically given the message that for them this talk is not just limited to the nuclear deal, but is also related to the memory and honor of its martyrs. The Trump Administration and Iran: Looking for a New Chapter The talks being held in Switzerland focused on wide-ranging topics such as nuclear issues and a ceasefire in Lebanon. The US delegation is led by Vice President Vance, and also includes adviser Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witcalf. Vance has indicated that President Donald Trump is in favor of a ‘new beginning’ in relations with Iran. He says that the main objective of the talks is to restore stability in West Asia and work together towards peace and prosperity. Islamabad Memorandum (MoU) and the way forward Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghai said that the talks are based on the follow-up mechanism of the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ held last week. This MOU was digitally signed by Donald Trump, Masood Pejeshkian and mediator Shahbaz Sharif. However, now instead of face-to-face signatures, a framework is being prepared to implement these conditions on the ground. Iranian President Pejeshkian claims that the terms of the MoU are in his favor and the return of Iran’s six billion dollars stuck in Qatar will be possible soon. Iran’s stand on the nuclear issue Iranian President Pezeshkian has made it clear that America’s main concern is Iran’s nuclear capability. He said, "The US administration only wants us not to make nuclear bombs. On this, our Supreme Leader has already clarified that we have no such intention." This dialogue is not only a means of freedom from economic sanctions for Iran, but is also a big challenge for America to regain its lost influence in West Asia.
