Nims Dai Death: Nirmal Purja, aka Nims Dai, a Nepalese and one of the world’s most renowned mountaineers, is no more. His death has been officially confirmed in a massive avalanche while climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range. Other members of the expedition also did not survive. This news has plunged the global mountaineering community into deep mourning.

Nirmal Purja’s company, Elite Exped, stated in an official statement that the entire team was caught in an avalanche while ascending from Camp 2 to Camp 3 on Thursday. Contact with the team was lost immediately after the accident. Rescue operations continued for two days, but on Saturday it was officially confirmed that no survivors were found. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the expedition consisted of 10 climbers, five of whom were Nepalese, led by Nirmal Purja. Members from Pakistan, Oman, the United States, China, and other countries were also part of the expedition. The avalanche struck the entire team at an altitude of approximately 6,600 meters.
Why is Broad Peak considered one of the most dangerous mountains?
Broad Peak, at approximately 8,047 meters, is considered the 12th highest peak in the world. Located in the Karakoram mountain range, it is considered one of the world’s most challenging peaks due to its sudden weather changes, blizzards, and avalanches. Even a small mistake during climbing can prove fatal.
Nepal’s Prime Minister expressed deep condolences
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah paid tribute to all the deceased climbers, including Nirmal Purja. He said that mountaineering is not just a journey to the summit, but a symbol of courage, discipline, and challenging human limits. He said that the Himalayas give glory to many people, but sometimes also take them into their embrace forever.
A record that shocked the world was made in 2019
In 2019, Nirmal Purja created history by climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just six months and a few days, setting a world record. This achievement brought him global recognition, and his story was made into the acclaimed Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible.” Nirmal Purja was a former British Gurkha soldier of Nepali origin. He successfully completed numerous high-altitude expeditions without supplemental oxygen. His leadership skills, discipline, and courage under difficult conditions earned him recognition among the world’s best mountaineers.
Drones and helicopters were also involved in the rescue operation.
Following the accident, Pakistani rescue agencies launched a relentless search operation using helicopters, drones, and ground teams. However, poor weather and persistent snowfall hampered the rescue effort. Several bodies were later identified, and the entire team was eventually confirmed dead.
