Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known worldwide for his extraordinary mountaineering abilities, has passed away in a tragic accident. Known worldwide as ‘Nims-Dai’, Nirmal Purja had set out on an important mission with a team of six mountaineers, during which he was caught in a terrible avalanche on the dangerous Broad Peak of PoK. After this heartbreaking incident, his last post on the social media platform ‘X’ is rapidly going viral, in which he had mentioned about his journey and dreams.
‘Broad Peak was not in the plan’, find out what Nirmal Purja’s final plan was.
In his last post, made on July 27th, just before his death, Nirmal Purja explained that climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) was never part of his original plan. He wrote that missions often change according to circumstances. Originally, the plan was to climb only G2, but during a trip to Pakistan, the thought occurred to him that if he conquered Broad Peak, only Cho Oyu would remain. With this, he would become the first person in history to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters twice without oxygen. It was this big dream and the desire to make history that drove him to choose this dangerous path.
Drone footage was found during the search operation, and hopes of finding survivors were dashed.
Shortly after the avalanche struck on Thursday, their tracking devices initially recorded some movement, giving rescue teams and their loved ones hope that they were still alive. However, as time passed, the rescue operation slowed due to adverse weather conditions. Finally, the search team’s worst fears were confirmed when a drone flown from Base Camp pinpointed the bodies of four climbers—Nirmal Purja ‘Nimsdai’, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, and Wang Zhong—just below Camp 1. Rescue teams believe that other climbers trapped on the Concordia side of the mountain may have also perished in the massive avalanche.

A former Gurkha soldier and former commando of Britain’s prestigious Special Boat Service (SBS), Nirmal Purja stunned the world in 2019 by conquering all 14 peaks in the world above 8,000 meters in just over six months as part of a historic expedition called “Project Possible.” After serving his country for nearly 16 years in the military, he devoted his life to mountaineering and today he is considered one of the brightest stars in the global mountaineering community.
