There should be an independent judicial inquiry into the Jantar Mantar incident and a national protocol should be made for the protests: Amitabh Thakur

In connection with the incidents that took place today during the political program organized at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Azad Adhikar Sena National President Amitabh Thakur has sent a letter to the Home Secretary of the Government of India demanding an independent judicial inquiry under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge.

He said that different claims are being made by both the protesters and the police regarding this incident. In such a situation, instead of political allegations and counter-allegations, only an impartial, independent and transparent investigation can bring out the truth and strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions.

In his letter, he has said that all CCTV footage, police videos, body-camera recordings and other electronic evidence will be kept safe until the investigation is completed. Amitabh Thakur has requested the Government of India to prepare a “National Protocol for Democratic Protests” that will be equally applicable to all governments and all political parties across the country.
This protocol talks about the rights and duties of peaceful protesters, rights, responsibilities and limitations of police and other law-enforcement agencies, clear procedures for use of force and detention, mandatory audio-video recording of significant police actions and provision of independent review of allegations of police excesses or other irregularities.
