Mumbai: Experienced middle order batsman Siddhesh Lad has been appointed as the new captain of the Mumbai cricket team for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. Now Lad… will take charge of the team in place of Shardul Thakur. Thakur has been removed from the captaincy under workload management.
Shardul Thakur took over the captaincy of Mumbai in place of Ajinkya Rahane in the 2025-26 Ranji season. However, the 42-time Ranji Trophy-winning Mumbai team could not progress beyond the quarter-finals that season.
Ranji season will start from October 11
The upcoming Ranji Trophy season will start from October 11. Mumbai will start its campaign with a match against Chandigarh. A top official of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has confirmed the appointment of Siddhesh Lad as the captain.
Lad scored a lot of runs in the last season
34-year-old Siddhesh Lad's performance in the last Ranji season has played an important role in getting the responsibility of captaincy. He scored 774 runs in eight matches at an average of 77.40. During this period, he scored five centuries and one half-century.
Lad left Mumbai and went to Goa.
Siddhesh Lad left the Mumbai team for some time and went to Goa. After this, after completing the 'cool off' period of one year, he returned to the Mumbai team in the 2024-25 season. After his return, he made an important place in the team with his performance and now he has been given the responsibility of captaining the Ranji team.
