After the latest round of ongoing talks in Washington DC, officials of both the countries have indicated that this agreement is now in its final stages. Most of the major issues have been resolved.

According to media reports, senior US officials present in Washington have described these talks as very “positive and fruitful”. An official, who did not wish to be named, said most of the work has been completed; Now very few issues remain to be resolved.

High-level meetings were held in Washington

The Indian delegation is currently in Washington, where they are holding meetings with officials of the ‘Office of the US Trade Representative’ (USTR). The US team is led by Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia.

At the same time, the Indian delegation is being led by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Commerce Department. Commenting on these talks, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore wrote on social media that the agreement will be a “win-win” situation for both the countries.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has also confirmed the progress made on this agreement. Goyal said that the initial phase of the agreement is almost complete. India aims to gain better and “preferential” access to the US market over its competitors, making Indian goods more affordable and easily available there.

The foundation of the agreement was laid in 2025

This historic agreement started with the conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on February 13, 2026. Its main objective is to reduce tariff barriers and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. On February 7, 2026, an interim framework was agreed between the two countries, which paved the way for this comprehensive agreement.

Why is this agreement important?

If this agreement takes final form, it will prove to be a new milestone in India-US economic relations. America remains the biggest market for Indian exporters. Sectors like textiles, engineering and pharmaceuticals can benefit greatly from this new agreement.
