Allegations of gang rape and torture of many young girls at an army training center have sparked outrage in Britain. In the words of one victim, “We were treated like pieces of meat.”
At least four victims have told the BBC about their harrowing experiences in an interview. They were 17 at the time. They trained for five years at a prestigious military training college in North Yorkshire. Unable to bear the hellish torture, they left the army. They claim that the training center has a dangerous culture of misogyny and sexual violence, which is tolerated by the staff there. It is worth mentioning that a recent report said that 67 percent of women serving in the British army have been sexually harassed at least once in the past year by a male colleague.
In the words of one victim, “I wanted to become a soldier since childhood. But that dream was shattered. While I was in the training center, some of my colleagues raped me in a room for hours.” She added, “My peers tortured me. I felt like a piece of meat. Then I told the whole story to my family. Then I left the army training center.”
