Deep Look

Trump Prepares to Announce Major Alaska Gas Investment

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is expected to unveil plans Wednesday for South Korea to invest approximately $54 billion in a project designed to export natural gas from Alaska.

The White House confirmed the planned announcement, which Bloomberg first reported. Trump is scheduled to appear with the commerce secretary at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.

The proposal has long been championed by Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who has encouraged South Korean participation and is seeking a third term in a competitive Alaska Senate race.

Proposed Pipeline Would Connect North Slope to Export Terminal

The project calls for an 807-mile, or approximately 1,300-kilometer, natural gas pipeline linking Alaska’s North Slope with a liquefied natural gas export terminal in southern Alaska.

The White House says the development would eventually reduce energy costs for Alaskans by delivering a reliable and secure natural gas supply.

The announcement concerns planned investment in the project; the administration’s projected savings would come as the development moves forward.

South Korean Commitments Stem From 2025 Trade Deal

The Alaska investment would draw on commitments made under a 2025 trade agreement between Washington and Seoul.

That agreement included pledges for $350 billion in investment in the United States in exchange for lower American tariffs on South Korean vehicles, auto parts and other products.

Trump has sought to highlight foreign investment commitments linked to his administration’s trade policy, including in states with closely contested Republican Senate campaigns.

Sullivan Faces Competitive Challenge From Mary Peltola

Sullivan, a two-term Republican senator and persistent supporter of the Alaska gas project, faces Democrat Mary Peltola, a former member of the U.S. House.

Alaska is among the Republican-held states Democrats are targeting in the 2026 midterm elections, which are less than five weeks away.

Trump won the state comfortably in each of his presidential campaigns. Nevertheless, the Senate contest has become competitive, making the investment announcement politically significant.

Iowa Steel Proposal Provides a Similar Campaign Backdrop

Wednesday’s expected announcement follows Trump’s unveiling Monday of plans for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa.

The proposed facility would be built by a Minnesota company owned by an Indian industrial conglomerate.

Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson, who spoke during the Oval Office announcement, is competing against Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Joni Ernst.

Like Alaska, Iowa has consistently favored Trump in presidential elections but now features a closely contested Senate race.

Democrats need to gain a net of four seats in the 100-member chamber to take the majority from Republicans.

Fuel Prices and Economic Dissatisfaction Shape Election Debate

The investment announcements come as voters confront near-record fuel prices associated with the unresolved war with Iran.

Republicans defending their congressional majority also face dissatisfaction with Trump’s management of the economy.

A late-July poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that only about one-third of Americans approved of his economic performance.

Approximately seven in 10 respondents described the economy as poor, underscoring the difficult political environment surrounding the administration’s investment announcements.
