Trump’s double diplomacy! Separate meetings with Netanyahu and Zelensky at the White House
New Delhi:US President Donald Trump met separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday. The meetings held with both the leaders are being considered very important in view of the current global situation. On one hand, the tension between Israel and Iran is continuously increasing in West Asia, while on the other hand, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is not showing any signs of stopping. In such a situation, America is busy strengthening its strategy on both fronts.
Both the meetings held in the White House were held completely behind closed doors. Therefore, the detailed points of the talks were not made public. However, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt, while giving information on social media, said that both the meetings took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. It is believed that in these meetings important topics related to America’s future foreign policy and security strategy were discussed.
Tribute paid to Senator Graham
Before the meetings, President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Zelensky also attended the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham was long considered a strong supporter of both Israel and Ukraine. He died this month, after which many big leaders paid tribute to him.
Trump-Netanyahu discussion on Iran and regional security
The most prominent topic in the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu was related to Iran. The two leaders discussed the current situation in West Asia and regional security. Before the meeting, Trump had expressed displeasure over reports of Netanyahu’s possible sharing of information about Iran’s underground nuclear base. However, in the pictures released after the meeting, both the leaders appeared in a normal and positive atmosphere. US Vice President JD Vance, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth were also present in the meeting. According to reports, issues like the situation on the Lebanon border, activities of Hezbollah and the future of the Abraham Accords were also discussed.
Discussion on security needs of Ukraine
The main focus of the meeting with President Zelensky was to strengthen the defense capability of Ukraine. After the meeting, Zelensky described it as useful and constructive. He said the two countries discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense system, licensing of Patriot interceptor missiles and increasing defense cooperation. Ukraine considers these systems very important for its security amid continuous missile attacks from Russia.
Drone cooperation and peace process also discussed
During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed increasing cooperation in drone technology and the ongoing peace process to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Zelensky stressed the need to quickly implement the decisions taken at recent NATO meetings. After the White House meeting, he also reached Capitol Hill, where he met American lawmakers and discussed issues related to future military assistance and cooperation to Ukraine.
