Trump’s former security advisor John Bolton confessed to the crime in court, found guilty in confidential documents case

John Bolton, who was the National Security Advisor during the first term of US President Donald Trump, has confessed his crime before the court in the case of illegally possessing confidential government documents. Bolton has pleaded guilty after reaching an agreement with the US Department of Justice in this case. Although the court will give the final decision on his punishment, but due to this agreement, he is expected to get some relief from his jail term.
John Bolton, 77, pleaded guilty in US District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland to possession of sensitive national security documents. Under American law, this crime carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 10 years. The court has fixed October 28 as the date of sentencing in this case.
John Bolton was charged last year with a total of 18 charges, according to prosecutors. The investigation alleged that he kept private notes and many confidential documents prepared while he was National Security Advisor. Not only this, he had also shared some of this sensitive information with his family members. Investigative agencies claim that Bolton had sent more than a thousand pages of confidential information related to his tenure to his family.
According to court documents, Bolton shared some confidential documents with his wife and daughter. After sending a document, he also wrote in the message that there will be no discussion on this topic. However, the investigation found no evidence that his family had shared these documents with any other person. But after leaving government service, his personal email account was targeted by a hacker linked to Iran, and security agencies had also expressed fear of leaking of confidential information.
As part of the settlement with the Justice Department, Bolton has agreed to pay a fine of US $2.25 million. Apart from this, they will have to give up some retirement related facilities available from federal service. The agreement also includes that they will cooperate with intelligence officers during interrogation and will also perform 100 hours of community service. The prosecution has recommended to the court that the prison sentence be limited to a maximum of five years, but the court is not bound to accept this recommendation.
The relationship between John Bolton and President Donald Trump deteriorated significantly in 2019 when Bolton left the post of National Security Advisor.
