UNSC Election 2028-29: India stakes claim for United Nations Security Council, Jaishankar said – India will become the voice of developing countries
New Delhi, 14 July. India has officially submitted its claim to become a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term of 2028-29. Foreign Minister S. Launching India’s election campaign at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Jaishankar said that India is fully committed to building a secure, stable and prosperous world. He said that strengthening the voice of developing countries and giving their concerns a proper place in the global decision-making process will be India’s top priority.
S. Referring to India’s ‘SHANTI’ approach, Jaishankar said that its aim is to ensure overall progress in the world based on rules, trust and integrity. He also said on social media that developing countries should get a more influential role in deciding a shared global future.
Emphasis will be on reform based multilateralism
The External Affairs Minister said that India will remain committed to pursuing reformed multilateralism so that global institutions can become more democratic, representative and effective. He said India’s approach will be based on dialogue, cooperation and resolving differences.
Peacebuilding and promotion of women’s participation
Jaishankar said that India will work towards making the UN peacekeeping system more capable, technology-rich and effective as per the future needs. Additionally, the role of women peacekeepers will also be continuously encouraged under the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda.
Emphasis on safe and responsible use of AI
The External Affairs Minister said that India will support an inclusive, safe and public interest based human-centric approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI). At the same time, India will remain equally committed to tackling the threats posed to international peace and security by misuse of AI.
Strict stance against maritime security and terrorism
He said India will promote a free, open and rules-based maritime order in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Security of maritime trade, prevention of piracy, safety of seafarers and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations will be given priority. On the issue of terrorism, Jaishankar said that India supports effective and sustained action on terrorism financing. He also stressed the need for a transparent, objective and evidence-based sanctions system for listing terrorist organizations.
Support sought from member countries
The External Affairs Minister said that the need of the hour is strong participation of developing countries in a reform-based, fairly representative and result-oriented Security Council. Appealing to the UN member states to support India’s candidature, he said that India’s presence in the Security Council will help in making the decision-making process of this important institution more effective and balanced.
