Keeping in mind the convenience of the people, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) keeps adding new features to UPI from time to time. One of these special facilities is UPI Lite.
UPI Lite is a lighter and faster version of UPI. It has been started especially to make small payments easier and faster. Its biggest feature is that there is no need to enter UPI PIN every time while making payment. Also, small transactions can be done easily even when the internet speed is slow.
What is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite was launched in the year 2023 so that digital payments of small amounts can be made without any hassle. It works like a small digital wallet inside your UPI app. In this you can add some money in advance and if needed, you can make immediate payment from the same balance.
Now a maximum balance of up to Rs 5,000 can be maintained in UPI Lite. However, only a maximum of Rs 1,000 can be paid at a time. Small transactions can be done several times throughout the day, but the total transaction will be within the prescribed limit.
Benefits of UPI Lite
- While making small payments, there is no need to enter UPI PIN every time, due to which the payment is done quickly.
- Small expenses made through UPI Lite do not appear separately in the bank statement, but can be easily viewed within the UPI app.
- Even if the internet speed is low or the network is weak, small payments can be made easily.

How to activate UPI Lite?
- First of all open any UPI app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM.
- Go to the UPI Lite option visible in the app.
- Accept terms and conditions.
- Select your bank account.
- Add money to UPI Lite wallet by entering UPI PIN for the first time.
- After this, there will be no need to enter PIN every time to make small payments and you will be able to easily use UPI Lite.
