Government's decision on UPI payments : There is a bad news for the people making payments through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in the country. The Modi government at the Center has issued a new gazette notification regarding UPI on 14 September 2026. In which the way has been cleared for charging on UPI transactions of more than Rs 2000. That means you will be charged on UPI payments of more than Rs 2000. Regarding which Congress has attacked the government.

According to the Gazette notification issued by the Modi government, banks and payment system providers cannot levy any charges on UPI transactions up to ₹2,000 and RuPay debit card transactions of any amount. For RuPay Debit Card, MDR will remain 0% irrespective of the transaction amount. What's more, UPI transactions worth more than Rs 2000 have been taken out of the earlier legal protection. This means that UPI transactions above Rs 2,000 may be charged under the MDR framework in future. However, the government has not decided any rate yet.
Congress targeted the government
The country's largest opposition party, Congress, has reacted sharply to the gazette notification issued by the government. Congress wrote in X Post on Tuesday, 'Narendra Modi has brought a new plan for recovery from the public. Now the government will make recovery on UPI payments above ₹2,000. The plan is that 0.5% charge will be levied on every UPI payment above ₹2,000, meaning – if you make a purchase of ₹5,000, then a charge of ₹25 will be levied…. If you make a purchase of ₹10,000, ₹50 will be charged.
The opposition party further said in a social media post, 'Earlier UPI payment was completely free, but this was not seen from Narendra Modi and the game of extortion started here too. Modi's plan is clear – loot the public as much as possible and fill your friend's coffers. This government is not the government of the people, it is the government of a few industrialists and Narendra Modi is their agent.
